The UC Sprouts program, founded in 2016, is a supplemental program that provides disadvantaged youth in Merced County with supplemental food literacy, earth science, and health education. UC Merced students connect with community youths in the classroom exploring these important topics as well as engaging their interested in obtaining a higher education. The program also offers an opportunity for community youths to step outside the traditional classroom setting and visit the Campus Community Garden at UC Merced for a hands-on experience. Some of the vegetation grown in the garden has included: carrots, cherry and heirloom tomatoes, rainbow chard, beets, broccoli, zucchini, and a large variety of herbs.
